Surgical Exposures for Orthodontics

An impacted tooth simply means that the tooth is “stuck” and cannot erupt or move into place. This is most common with wisdom teeth and with upper “eye teeth.”

Impacted wisdom teeth are normally removed if they have no function but the eye teeth or canines are replacing deciduous or “baby” teeth. When the eye teeth are impacted it leaves holes in the smile which usually calls for orthodontic treatment or braces. Part of that treatment may involve exposing the “stuck” eye tooth to place a bracket on the tooth. The tooth then can be guided into its normal position.
